Thursday 13th March, Eve slips on stone floor at home and falls. She can still walk and puts ice pack on her left foot which got twisted.
Saturday 15th: she goes to Minor Injuries Unit in Weymouth. After X-rays, discovers she has broken all five toes on left foot. She is given big boot to wear + some strong antibiotics to take, and is referred to the Virtual (!!) Fracture Clinic who send her letter with advice + exercises to do. The antibiotics create havoc with bowels and make her feel fuzzy, but infection, inflammation, redness and swelling get worse.
On Tuesday 18th she goes to see her GP, who says red blotches on her foot and halfway up her calf could be the result of trauma or infection, but he changes antibiotics to ones less harsh. Eve hobbles about for 2 days in one big boot with two sticks.
Thursday 20th in evening, Eve is having a difficult time with pain and stomach aches, so goes to A&E in Dorchester. However, because she has no temperature, she is assured antibiotics will work (and advised she could always ‘double the dose’ – really?).
Friday 21st Early next morning she is sick twice, but still has no temperature. Nasty stomach-ache lessens and she decides to stay in bed for the day, ‘nil by mouth’, to try to keep down the antibiotics, though foot is still very hot, very red and very swollen (even after 5 days of medication). Foot is kept up, with occasional ice packs. She sips water. Having never broken a bone in her entire life, she has now done it in spades – all 5 toes. It’s almost laughable. On the news she hears that it is Comic Relief and Red Nose Day. Eve has had a Red Toes /Hot Foot/ Bad Gut Day.
Today Sat 22nd, Eve hopes to be able to see the comic side of all this – maybe eat something, and hopefully get some relief.🙂🙏👢🦶🏽💊 Eve will spend weekend at home – quietly but with determination to kick the infection and reward herself with large glass of wine!🍷Cheers.
