Nectarines cover

Eve’s fifth book, entitled Nectarines: Short Stories and Flash Fiction, is her second collection of pithy and colourful stories. Like a bowl of nectarines or fruit, they are all different, deliciously readable, full of fragrance and flavour. Her fiction, witty and full of compassion, make us curious to read more.
Eve’s stories encompass broken dreams, calf love, hospital humour, poisonings, fractious families and love affairs. Surprising characters inhabit these tales: a loan shark, a virgin and her lawyer, a wife who steals, a boy who dreams of rats, Dublin landladies, amateur robbers, a poet’s daughter, a frustrated cook. Curious activities include: building an igloo, star gazing, wife hugging, journalism aboard ship in mid-ocean, sewing in prison, spying by telescope, and creating a soap opera. In powerful, startling flash fiction, readers encounter a bull that cried, a snub on a train, a dark theatre, an alluring temptation, a severed ear and a small – but perfect – nectarine.
There are 42 stories – some very short and known as Flash Fiction, also called ‘five- minute’ or micro-fiction. Savour one unique tale at a time and then decide what to read next. Or just read one if time is short. It might lift you, bless you and change your day!
