EDUCATION AND TRAVEL
Eve Bonham was born in southern England and went to school in the Midlands. After gaining an MA in English Language and Literature in Ireland at Trinity College Dublin, she trained as a language teacher and went to Thailand for two years to teach in Bangkok. While living in South East Asia she explored Laos and Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Burma and then spent many months backpacking alone in Nepal, India, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, finally making her way home to Britain. Other overland travel has included traversing the USA and Canada by bus, journeying around South America, and studying art whilst wandering round Italy. More recently she has visited Australia, Africa, India, Mexico and Patagonia.
BUSINESS CAREER
After her return to the UK from the Far East, Eve completed a Business Management course and joined Bonhams Fine Art Auctioneers, and became, at that time, London’s only woman auctioneer. After a few years in the auction business whilst living in Chelsea, she moved on to public relations work, teaching adult literacy and marketing Italian jewellery. After moving to Wiltshire, she switched to framing pictures, wholesaling knitwear and running a boutique in Bath. Eve then took up professional lecturing, and freelance journalism. Returning to London, she became the UK Campaign Organiser for the 1987 UN International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. For some years, Eve has been a non-executive Director of a London property investment company. She took up writing fiction after her children left school in 2006 and has been working as an author since then.
WRITING AND BOOKS
Her writing has included articles in fine art publications, sailing journals and other magazines. Eve is a dedicated letter writer, has scribbled in diaries for years, invented tall stories for her children and told tales throughout her life. She is the author of many short stories and her first book was a collection: Madness Lies and Other Stories, published in 2008. A second book, a novel entitled: To the End of the Day, was published in 2011, with a Polish edition in 2012 and an eBook in 2013. Her book The Lost Journey Homeward was published by Onwards and Upwards Publishers in June 2015, in hardback, paperback and as an eBook. Her latest book, Dear Magpies, a novel set in Dorset, is to be published by SilverWood Books in November 2019. She continues to write short stories and one is included in an anthology. For a few years she published Flash Fiction – stories of 500 words or less – on her blog. These can now be read on this website. She still writes occasional articles in magazines.
SAILING
Eve has been a competitive swimmer, did athletics at university, played squash and done mountain trekking. Most of all she has messed about in boats. As a child she learnt to sail a dinghy, moved on to yacht racing off the Isle of Wight and then took part in Ocean Races, sailing with Clare Francis in the Round Britain Race and in the 1977/8 Whitbread Round the World Race. Eve competed in a Transatlantic Race in 1981 sponsored by British Telecom, and in other races, including the 1983 Azores Race when she took her mother as crew! In 1989 Eve and Michael and their young family sailed away for a year in their wooden boat to the Canaries and across the Atlantic to the West Indies, and back again via the Azores. Over the years there were further sailing odysseys to the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the Caribbean, to Venezuela and the east coasts of America and Canada.
FAMILY LIFE
After her marriage Eve and her family left England to live in a Breton village. After 14 years in France the family returned to England and she and her husband now live in rural Dorset. She writes every day and works part time for a property investment company. Other activities include collecting art, painting watercolours, planting trees, befriending the lonely, giving talks and reading good books. A few years ago Eve became a Christian and this has profoundly altered her views on life and eternity. Her faith, her family and friends have first call on her time and love, and writing is her passion.
CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS
Eve is proud to be a Patron of Words for the Wounded, a charity which raises money for the rehabilitation of wounded servicemen and women via writing prizes and donations.
She is a member of the Society of Authors, the Society of Women Writers and Journalists, the Sherborne Literary Society, The Royal Cruising Club, The Ocean Cruising Club, The International Association of Cape Horners, and is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers and a Freeman of the City of London.
